Serving Kindergarten through Twelfth grade, Brooklyn Prospect pairs students with excellent teachers in a college preparatory environment using the International Baccalaureate program. We prepare students to become global citizens and help them to develop the love of learning that provides the foundation for lifelong personal and academic success. This position reports to the Windsor Terrace Middle School - Afterschool Program Manager and support serving our Sixth - Eighth grade student population. This role will work closely with individuals across the organization on all issues related to the efficiency and effectiveness of running our Middle School Afterschool program.

About The Role

We are looking for highly qualified specialists who provide instruction in Art.. We are looking for a Youth & Development employee who specializes in 1 or more of the following competencies: To be able to teach art to students, you require excellent artistic skills Can demonstrate art abilities and knowledge of various art techniques. Excellent verbal and listening skills are essential for art teachers to have to facilitate regular interactions with students. Be able to supervise groups of students and easily and clearly explain art assignments, art techniques, art materials, art history and aesthetics. Encourage students to express their unique ideas and opinions and become more creative. Have ​​well-developed interpersonal skills to get along with their students and various other personalities associated with the school's culture. 

 

Activity Specialists facilitate youth groups, organize trips, conduct outreach and recruitment, interact with parents and partner with the community. Our Activity Specialists are responsible for being rock stars that can create lessons, projects and objectives that meet the individual students’ needs. They foster an atmosphere of fun and learning and serve as role models to youth, always conducting themselves in the utmost professional manner and maintaining appropriate boundaries.  They are also responsible for maintaining the target number of participants.

  

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a group of up to 15 participants, facilitate select activities and maintain health and well-being of all children enrolled.

  • Planning, implementing, and conducting sports programs and activities for students

  • Explain techniques and safety procedures for youth participants and demonstrate appropriate use of materials and equipment.

  • Establish clear objectives for sessions and units. Communicate those objectives to the students.

  • Develop and organize sports teams, including practices, games, and tournaments tailored to students.

  • Create lesson plans and practice schedules that focus on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

  • Assist with program set-up and clean up.

  • Assist with drills to practice site-evacuation/emergency procedures and capable of implementing such procedures.

  • Teach fundamental skills, including passing, catching, and strategic play.

  • Provide individualized instruction and feedback to help students improve their skills and understanding of the game. This includes evaluating student performance and making recommendations for improvement. 

  • Communicate athletic progress with the Program Manager.

  • Take attendance.

  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.

  • Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other students, explaining rules, and encouraging participation. 

  • Engage, encourage and motivate students.

  • Adapt coaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests. 

  • Encourage positive character development in all youth.

  • Perform additional duties and projects assigned at the discretion of the After-School Program Director.

Qualifications

  • Must be knowledgeable and skilled in selected activities and have prior experience successfully working with K-12 youth groups.

  • Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or coaching expertise required (knowledge of multiple sports, rules, strategies, and techniques, with experience in coaching or playing the sport).

  • Serve as a mentor to enable, inspire and motivate students, fostering a positive and supportive environment.

  • Understanding of safety protocols and ability to enforce rules to ensure a safe playing environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

  • Must have the ability to lead participants in-group activities, especially enrichment and recreational activities.

  • Possess imagination, a sense of humor, patience, conviction, sincerity, enthusiasm, initiative, self-control, adaptability, willingness to learn, integrity, and ingenuity.

  • Must have passion for BPCS’s mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development.

  • Have a high school diploma.

  • Certifications and credentials in respective skill-based activities are highly preferred.

  • Able to work late afternoons and/or evenings.  After School hours can span from 3:00 to 6:30 pm.  Most days you will be working from 4:00 to 6:00.

  • Candidates who are qualified to lead instruction in more than one sport are preferred.

  • Must pass a pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to employment history and criminal background check.

  • Demonstrate appreciation and understanding of group management and child development.

  • Show ability to accept supervision and guidance.

  • Demonstrate ability to follow and execute JV teams and scrimmages.

Salary: $25 - $35 per hour
